The Botswana Defence Force Retired Members Association (BDFRMA), an apolitical and non-profit making Association, registered with the Registrar of Societies, Chapter 18:01, was established in 2008 following the realization that there was no formal structure to address the diverse needs and welfare of retired members. Another primary consideration was the desire to provide a resourceful link between the Government and the retirees and other stakeholders as the need for mutual interaction between the two is of paramount importance.
The life of the soldier during active service is normally characterized by huge sacrifices in terms of personal and societal advancement. The opportunity cost of being a soldier is normally amplified in the commitment to the concept of “duty to the nation comes first”, the result being loss of numerous societal opportunities enjoyed by other citizens. Upon retirement, the retiree faces challenges of not only re-integration into the wider society but also duty imposed mental fatigue, physical disabilities and limited employment avenues in the civilian labor market. What then happens to the plight of this soldier and his family? The BDFRMA comes in handy as a receptacle for filling in the vacuum of a recognizable administrative structure providing for the welfare of the soldier.
The Assciation is formed by Retired Members of Botswana Defence Force who has aspirations of developing the nation and contributing to meet economic growth, and answering the question at heart of “A Prosperous, Productive and Innovative Nation “as outlined by the Botswana’s Vision 2036.
